Residency Application

We are pleased to offer a unique residency opportunity for makers of fine craft. Studio space is available at the Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios in St. John’s, NL.

The Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios is an incubator with the goal of establishing full time, professional craft businesses in Newfoundland and Labrador. This supportive and creative environment for emerging craftspeople works to advance their skills along an individualized path of development.

We are inviting applications from makers interested in renting studio space at the Artisan Studios. Timing of the residency as well as studio size is flexible, and we are eager to expose the studios artisans to the diversity of experience which an incoming Maker in Residence can bring.


Residency features:

  • Studio space in the Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios
  • Your choice of studio size:
    • Second floor, 120 square feet, in-studio running water, storage, work surface
    • Main floor, ** square feet
  • Flexible timing: spaces are available for 2 – 12 months.
  • Studios do not contain equipment or furniture; however, access to shared equipment is possible. (Industrial sewing machine and kiln are on site.) There are chairs and tables on site.
  • Studio access between the hours of 8 am and 11 pm daily
  • The possibility of an opportunity to offer a short term workshop(s), with compensation at CARFAC rates
  • The possibility of an end of residency exhibition
  • Assistance with finding accommodations in St. John’s
  • International applicants welcome; facility in English advisable

Residency requirements:

  • Rental fees: Second Floor Studio – $300/month, plus HST. Main floor studio – $500/month, plus HST. Liability insurance included in rental fee.
  • An artist talk, open to the public.
  • Presence in the studio during public hours
  • Interaction and sharing of experience with the studio artisans
  • Interaction with the visiting public

Decisions regarding the Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios will be made based on caliber of work, the perceived value of the resident’s experience to the emerging artisans and the ability of the resident to talk with the public.

For your information, we provide the following information about the Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios

The Quidi Vidi Village Artisan Studios is a public space, open to visitors five days a week from April through December, with shorter hours in the winter months. Studios are open fronted, and visitors are invited to ask questions about products, tools and techniques. Sales are encouraged. Visitor numbers are high during the summer months, and applicants should consider this when selecting a residency term.

Studio spaces are normally open to emerging artisans wishing to establish full time professional craft studios in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. The Artisan Studios is managed by the Anna Templeton Centre for Craft, Art and Design.

  • A 4600 square foot, fully accessible two-story building
  • Ten individual studio spaces of approximately 120 square feet each
  • All second floor studios have running water, separate ventilation, and a window
  • Large skylights to provide plenty of natural light
  • Studio spaces designed for interaction with the public
  • Separate shared workspace for larger projects and equipment
  • Main Floor gift shop has been set up in 2020 to aid in selling artisans work
  • Open atrium exhibition space
  • Elevator access to second floor
  • Public washrooms
  • High-speed wireless internet
  • Shared point of sale system for credit/debit card sales
  • There is no open flame allowed in the building. There is also a strict no pets and no alcohol policy.
  • Craftspeople supply all of their own tools, equipment, furniture and supplies.
